Irvine family session

I was fortunate to document the maternity, birth and in-home newborn sessions for this beautiful family. It’s such a unique and fulfilling experience to capture families as they grow - to document their excitement, intensity, and every other raw emotion that unfolds in this season of life. To see through their smiles how their hearts have swelled larger than they ever thought possible. It was amazing to witness their first baby girl promote to the role of big sister so naturally, and to observe how seamlessly they transitioned into a family of four.

Welcome baby girl

This strong Mama labored beautifully at home with the support of her husband, midwife, assistant midwife and doula. She utilized hypnobirthing techniques to work peacefully through her surges. I’m always so astounded to watch Mamas labor so calmly and serene. During the birth of my own daughter, I thought I sounded like a wounded hyena.

Eventually Mama trusted her intuition and transferred to St. Joseph’s hospital. Baby was asynclitic and Mama, her midwife and the hospital staff all did everything they could to help baby rotate, without much luck. She stayed so strong through her cesarean. She softly sang “Jesus loves me” as she lay there on the operating table, while her husband gently held her hand. It was one of the most intimate, inspiring moments I’ve been a part of. Their precious baby girl entered the world, healthy and strong.

Mama’s helper

I met a lovely family this week in the local mountains. I’m pretty shy, and get nervous at the prospect of meeting new clients and hoping they’ll like me. They were down to earth and sarcastic… my kind of people! Big sister enjoyed listening to baby’s heartbeat, and then we played with play doh while her mama had a prenatal appointment. Mama even sent us off with fresh peaches from their backyard. The mountains hold such a special place in my heart, so it will be a real treat to capture a birth with the hills as a backdrop through their bedroom windows.

Birth of a Mama

I was able to document a beautiful homebirth last month. This mama was truly a divine being. She is a yoga teacher, and those aspects of her charcter completely shined through. She labored with finesse. She was calm, focused, and exuded such elegance and purpose.

Her mother flew in all the way from Japan to be present for the birth and ensuing days. It was a such a pleasant atmosphere - surrounded by her husband, family, doula, midwife (Miracle of Life Midwifery) and labor support. She labored with a tribe of women literally in her corner.

I am grateful to have been welcomed into her birth space. Welcome to the world, little man. <3
